Dull, lackluster teeth can make you feel self-conscious about smiling. In fact, the National Institute of Teeth Whitening found that over 90 percent of adults surveyed believe that their smile affects the way others perceive them. To address dental discoloration, Dr. Arlene Caringal offers in-office teeth whitening at our Toronto and Scarborough, ON, locations as well as at-home whitening kits. A single teeth whitening session in our office can dramatically lighten your smile by up to several shades, so you can feel confident sharing your smile with the world.
You may be a candidate for teeth whitening if you have extrinsic stains, which affect the outermost portion of the tooth known as enamel. Extrinsic stains are often caused by dark foods and drinks, including tea, coffee, red wine, and soda. They can be eliminated with a professional teeth whitening treatment.
Intrinsic stains affect the inner portion of the tooth called dentin. These types of stains are caused by medications such as tetracycline, overexposure to fluoride, or trauma. Unfortunately, teeth whitening cannot effectively address intrinsic staining, though there are other alternatives. If you have intrinsic stains, we may recommend porcelain veneers to brighten your smile.
Should you choose to undergo a teeth whitening treatment, you have two options: in-office sessions or a take-home kit. We can help you select the best option for your unique needs.
We use the Philips Zoom! whitening system in our office, which is a trusted and proven brand when it comes to teeth whitening. Professional in-office whitening is ideal for patients who want results fast. Under the supervision of our dentists, the Zoom! system can brighten your smile by up to eight shades in a single appointment.
Before applying the whitening solution, Dr. Caringal or one of her associates will cover your gums to prevent any transfer. We will then evenly apply a coat of whitening gel over the surface of each tooth. To activate the bleaching agent, we will apply an LED light directly to your teeth for 15 minutes. We will repeat this process three times for the best possible results.
If you have no time restraints and would rather undergo treatment in the comfort of your home, you can choose a take-home whitening kit. This professional kit is custom-designed for your smile. It should fit snugly over your top and bottom teeth. Simply apply the whitening solution to the tray and place it over your teeth for the directed period of time.
A take-home kit can also be used to maintain the results of your in-office treatment.
There are many over-the-counter products that promise to brighten your teeth. However, they often contain harsh chemicals that can irritate your gums and cause dental sensitivity. Choosing to undergo a professional whitening treatment is:
The American Dental Association has concluded that teeth whitening is extremely safe when performed under the supervision of a dentist.
